Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has revised his ideal security rules for multisigs, suggesting that each signer change their key after every operation. He noted that this recommendation is based on the assumption that ECDSA might weaken, but not be instantly broken, thus requiring protection against risks such as in-mempool front-running. Vitalik also suggested that, if possible, signatures should be collected off-chain to minimize the time between "signature revealed" and "key no longer active." He warned that rushing upgrades could lead to loss of funds due to misconfiguration, hence "don't rush to do anything." Vitalik's original post emphasized the risks of AI-accelerated mathematics to cryptography, including quantum vulnerability and potentially AI-vulnerable cryptography such as ML-DSA, FHE, and lattice cryptography, all of which could accelerate the exposure of ECDSA vulnerabilities.
