A $1,000 MetaMask incident could turn Ethereum’s staking queue into a $5 billion traffic jam
MetaMask's precautionary validator exits, stemming from a roughly $1,000 reward diversion identified on September 30, are testing Ethereum's staking capacity. Lido expects its affected ETH to return gradually to Ethereum staking, with the entry backlog valued at about $3.59 billion in an October 7 snapshot. Bitquery's October 1 snapshot identified 16,965 MetaMask-operated validators holding 565,056 ETH that had exited or joined the exit queue. If this entire cohort returns as new demand beyond the current backlog, the combined workload could reach 1,963,978 ETH, valued at approximately $5.04 billion, potentially extending the staking entry wait time to over 34 days.
