Solana researchers propose 'geographic speed plan' to cut block handover delays by over 50%
Researchers Roger Wattenhofer and Quentin Kniep have proposed a new plan (SIMD-0675 draft) to accelerate Solana's block production by scheduling validators based on geographic proximity. Their simulations suggest this could reduce the mean handover delay between honest validators from 36.2 milliseconds to 17.0 milliseconds. The proposal, submitted as a pull request on September 29, relies on self-reported validator locations and aims to make fast handovers less dependent on large stake centers. It also acknowledges potential security trade-offs, such as longer consecutive control sequences for adversaries.
