Despite growing opposition to data center construction, traders on the prediction market platform Kalshi believe there is a 75% probability that the number of data centers planned or operating in the U.S. will exceed 5,100 by 2027. This probability has risen from 60% in two weeks. Currently, according to Data Center Map, the U.S. has over 4,700 operational and planned data centers, with Virginia leading with over 670 facilities. Tech companies are expanding their data center footprint in states such as Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, but these projects face opposition from communities and activists due to concerns about potentially increasing local utility costs and consuming large amounts of water. Previously, Oracle's data center project in New Mexico was stalled after regulators rejected its natural gas pipeline application.
