The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced 1,615 new generic top-level domain (gTLD) applications on October 7, with .agent being highly contested with 13 applicants. OpenAI submitted 15 extension applications, including .agent, .agi, and .gpt; Google and Meta also applied for multiple AI-related domains. Simultaneously, crypto companies are actively participating, with .bit having 11 applications, .crypto 5, .wallet and .dao 4 each, and .bitcoin, .btc, and .nft 2 each. The Cardano Foundation and Frax Finance have also submitted applications, aiming to connect blockchain names with the global internet domain system.
