Morgan Stanley's Wilson: Bond Market Has Replaced Fed Rate Hikes, Two Signals to Watch for US Stock Rebound
Morgan Stanley's Chief Equity Strategist, Mike Wilson, noted in his latest weekly report that the U.S. 10-year government bond yield has risen by 120 basis points since February, leading to a significant tightening of financial conditions. He stated that the bond market is effectively taking over the Federal Reserve's role in raising interest rates, which might eliminate the need for the Fed to further increase policy rates. Wilson believes that a moderate U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, to be released this Wednesday, would help alleviate pressure on long-term yields. He advises investors to monitor two key forward-looking signals: the MOVE index, which measures bond market volatility, and the relative performance of financial stocks. This week, the third-quarter earnings reports from JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo will be crucial observation windows.
