The Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced on October 8 that it has finalized rules allowing the listing of domestic Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, with the framework set to take effect on October 16. The new regulations aim to support the development of Thailand's domestic crypto ETF ecosystem and strengthen the capabilities of local financial institutions. Under the new rules, Thailand will initially prohibit the issuance and offering of investment products linked to foreign crypto ETFs and restrict securities brokerage firms from providing overseas crypto ETF investment services to clients who do not qualify as institutional or ultra-high-net-worth investors. Initially, only Bitcoin and Ethereum are eligible as underlying assets, and each ETF must passively track a single cryptocurrency. Furthermore, the new rules prohibit securities brokerage firms from providing margin loans for crypto ETF purchases and require investors to receive education on product characteristics and risks before trading.
