Microsoft President Brad Smith calls for urgent AI regulation, stating the UK is best suited to lead global rules.
Microsoft President Brad Smith called for urgent AI regulation, stating that consumer products like milk and washing machines are subject to more regulation than AI companies. Smith described AI as both a "weapon and a tool," putting global cybersecurity at risk, and said it was "time" for global safety rules. He suggested that the UK, rather than the US or the EU, is best suited to lead the development of global AI safety rules because the UK's AI Safety Institute (AISI) has become a leader in AI safety testing. Smith also mentioned that despite warnings from former US President Donald Trump against "globalist" organizations interfering with American companies, and requests for Anthropic and OpenAI not to provide new models to UK testers, the AISI has confirmed it has access to and is testing the latest models. Smith believes the problem with voluntary self-regulation is that only "good companies" will comply, while "irresponsible companies" are the ones that need to be worried.
