Solana proposes offline signing to keep approvals valid after failed transactions
The Solana Foundation has proposed an offline signing mechanism to replace the existing durable nonces. This proposal allows offline approvals to remain valid even after a transaction fails. The new signing procedure will add an intermediate layer between the approval and execution of cold wallet keys, requiring affected operators to re-evaluate account permissions, application access, and custody controls. This scheme will enable offline signers to approve transactions using stored nonces, allowing approval and broadcast to occur at different times. The Solana Foundation has not yet set a final date for the removal of durable nonces and has provided an approximately six-month migration window, provided that suitable alternatives are ready, audited, and running on the mainnet.
