BitMEX Sued in UK for $27M Bitcoin Return Over Alleged Unlicensed Derivatives Trading
A British software engineer is suing BitMEX operator HDR Global Trading for the return of 324.8 BTC, worth approximately $27.2 million, alleging the crypto derivatives exchange traded with him in the UK without regulatory approval. The claim challenges 1,053 loss-making perpetual swap trades made between 2018 and 2022, arguing that BitMEX was not authorized to carry out such regulated activities in the UK. The lawsuit also accuses BitMEX of deceit, claiming the exchange knew it was unauthorized when it implicitly represented that it could lawfully trade with him. BitMEX spokesperson stated that no such claim has been formally served on HDR Global Trading Limited.
