According to Protos' analysis, before Donald Trump withdrew his threat to strike Iranian power plants on March 23, which led to a 14% plunge in Brent crude oil futures prices, traders had shorted over 6 million barrels worth of oil futures contracts. Bloomberg revealed that a senior advisor to the Chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) had requested the withdrawal of a tip-off regarding this insider trading. Analysts Paul Sankey and Tim Skirrow believe this could involve government leaks or insider trading. However, Lakshmi Sreekumar, a member of the Dallas Fed Energy Advisory Council, pointed out that the fundamental reasons for relatively moderate oil prices are the rebalancing of global oil flows, including pipeline diversions (37%), decreased Chinese demand (33%), and the release of strategic petroleum reserves (11%).
