The United States has imported potash from Belarus for the first time in four years, with the initial shipment of 30,000 tons expected to arrive at the Port of New Orleans on Wednesday.
The move comes as US President Donald Trump seeks cheaper fertilizers to counter rising farmer costs due to the Iran war and a trade dispute with Canada. Washington previously lifted sanctions on Belarus's main potash producer in March. Although the shipment accounts for only a small fraction of the 5.6 million tons of potash the US imported last year, it marks an initial opening in Washington's relationship with Minsk.
