With the support of the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Nasser Hospital in the Gaza Strip has launched a pilot project for kangaroo mother care (KMC). The project aims to help premature and low-birth-weight infants grow healthily through skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding. WHO data shows that KMC can reduce neonatal mortality by 32% and mortality within six months by 25%.
The project comes as the healthcare system in the Gaza Strip faces severe challenges due to the war, with a significant reduction in the number of neonatal intensive care units and incubators, putting premature and low-birth-weight infants at serious risk.
