Analysts suggest combining strategies to manage S&P 500 tech stock concentration risk amid equal-weight underperformance
CNBC reports that with the equal-weight S&P 500 strategy underperforming in 2026 and tech stocks appearing shaky, analysts are offering advice on managing S&P 500 risk. Todd Rosenbluth, head of research & editorial at TMX VettaFi, recommends combining market-cap weighted and equal-weight ETFs in a portfolio. Todd Sohn, chief ETF strategist at Baird Strategas, suggests diversifying with "low Tech, low correlation" alternatives, including actively managed SMID-cap funds, natural resources, energy sectors, and high-quality, short-duration investment-grade fixed income. The equal-weight S&P 500 has consistently lagged its market-cap weighted counterpart for almost four years, with September seeing a more than 4% drop for the equal-weight index.
