Strategists expect the Indian rupee to weaken towards 100 per dollar by the end of 2026 and mid-2027, despite recent measures by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to slow depreciation. The RBI's actions, including making speculative bets on the rupee more expensive and providing a special dollar window for oil companies, have helped the currency recover from 96.79 to the 95-level against the dollar. However, analysts from S&P Global Market Intelligence and Mizuho Securities believe these steps offer only short-term relief, as fundamental pressures from fund outflows, rising energy bills, a wider current account deficit, and a challenging global capital flow environment persist. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra reiterated the central bank's determination to ensure orderly movement in the foreign exchange market.
