Nine crypto companies have launched the Quantum Alliance to jointly prepare for potential quantum attacks. The Alliance estimates that 6.4 million Bitcoin, or 30.2% of the total supply, have public keys already exposed, making them vulnerable to future quantum computers that could reverse-engineer public keys to uncover secret keys. However, members disagree on when this threat will materialize and whether vulnerable Bitcoin holdings should be frozen. The Alliance, whose members include Hacken, Charles Hoskinson’s Midnight Foundation, Quantus and Postquant Labs, plans to publish common security tests and guidance for migrating existing networks to quantum-resistant systems.
