Yuriy Ryzhenkov, CEO of Metinvest, one of Ukraine's largest steel companies, urged the European Union to lift import restrictions on Ukrainian steel, arguing the country has been "bundled together" in measures primarily aimed at curbing cheap imports from China and Turkey. The EU recently capped tax-free steel imports at 18.3 million tonnes annually, a 47% reduction from 2024 levels, which could lead to a 50-60% drop in Ukraine's steel exports to the EU. An EU Commission spokesperson stated they considered Ukraine's difficult situation but acknowledged the specific quota is lower than in past years.
