British consumer price inflation rose to 3.5% in September, up from 3.1% in August, exceeding economists' forecasts of 3.4% and the Bank of England's 3% prediction. This marks the highest inflation rate since October 2025, driven by higher petrol and diesel costs. Separately, government borrowing also rose more than expected, pushing public debt above £3 trillion (US$4.01 trillion). These figures reinforce expectations for the Bank of England to raise its benchmark Bank Rate to 4% on November 5. Services price inflation also increased to 3.7% from 3.4% in August, while factory gate prices rose by 4.6% in the 12 months to September, the biggest increase since April 2023.
