The U.S. House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party released an analysis report on Tuesday stating that internal messages from the online investment platform Webull indicate one of its Chinese employees had access to U.S. customer information, despite the company's previous claims prohibiting such sharing. The committee noted that these messages date back to 2021 and questioned Webull's assertions that U.S. customer data is stored only in the U.S. and that access to sensitive data is controlled by U.S. employees. Previously, in an October 7 report, the committee stated that Webull has "structural ties" to the Chinese government, posing a national security threat to U.S. finance, after which Webull's stock price fell by over 19%. A Webull spokesperson responded that customer data protection is central to its operations, U.S. customer data is stored exclusively on U.S. AWS servers, and sensitive data access is restricted to U.S. employees. The spokesperson criticized the timing of the committee's release of messages related to a routine FINRA incident that was resolved in 2021.
