Canada is seeking to expand its liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations, with LNG Canada having secured approval in late September for a $33 billion expansion project aimed at doubling output at its Kitimat facility in British Columbia. However, critics point out that many of the major corporate investors involved in the project have histories of human rights abuses and environmental damage. Furthermore, the Kitimat facility, since its commissioning in late 2024, burned 350 million cubic meters of natural gas in 2025 due to issues with its main flare stack. The government of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has prioritized the LNG Canada and Ksi Lisims LNG projects to counter tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian goods since 2025.
