According to Al Jazeera, government websites in several countries worldwide have been temporarily taken offline for protection due to two high-severity security vulnerabilities discovered in the PHP programming language. The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) issued a rare public warning on Wednesday, advising websites that cannot immediately update to temporarily go offline. Authorities in countries such as Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, and the Czech Republic have taken steps to shut down some websites to apply security patches. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also warned about PHP risks on social media. The two vulnerabilities, dubbed PHP2Shell, were discovered with the help of AI models by researchers from security firms Calif and Wiz, with one vulnerability assisted by OpenAI. Wiz stated that these vulnerabilities are among the most severe in PHP and even software history, with underlying flaws existing for decades, but their exploitability was only discovered using AI tools. The PHP Foundation has urged all website administrators to update their code immediately and warned that AI will make such security vulnerabilities easier to discover.
