Finland's government on Thursday granted an operating licence for the Onkalo facility in western Finland, the world's first permanent underground repository for spent nuclear fuel. The facility is designed to store 6,500 tonnes of uranium from the country's five nuclear reactors, with the project cost estimated at $1.16 billion. While other countries are building similar facilities, Finland is expected to be the first to open one.
