Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Machado has returned to the country after 10 months in exile, having previously been blocked from returning multiple times by both the Venezuelan government and the Trump administration. This time, however, she received a "green light" from the Trump administration. Although the Trump administration is currently satisfied with Venezuela's incumbent leader, Delcy Rodriguez, and has signed a major 100-year oil deal involving 65 billion barrels of crude oil with her, Machado has publicly criticized the agreement. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Machado's safe return is a "direct result of U.S.-backed reconciliation talks." Rodriguez called Machado's return "a show" but also indicated a potential willingness to hold talks with Machado. Machado still faces charges including treason.
