Amazon, Google, and Microsoft Sign Nuclear Power Purchase Agreements to Meet Growing Energy Demands of AI Data Centers
Amazon has signed a 20-year nuclear power contract with Constellation to procure 690 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Maryland, with 190 MW of new capacity expected to come online between 2030 and 2032. Google has also signed an agreement to introduce an additional 890 MW of nuclear power capacity in the United States. Microsoft has contracted to purchase 20 years of power from the restarted Three Mile Island nuclear reactor. Constellation is investing over $4.3 billion to upgrade 11 reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The U.S. Department of Energy is also providing up to $4.4 billion in loans to support the restart of three closed nuclear power plants, aiming to restore approximately 2.25 gigawatts (GW) of generation capacity.
