Iranian Navy says oiler in Strait of Hormuz hit mine and caught fire, Tehran reiterates strait closed to illegal vessels
The Iranian Navy reported that an oil tanker caught fire after striking a mine in the Strait of Hormuz, forcing it to abort its voyage. Citing a statement, the semi-official Iranian Tasnim News Agency reported that a non-compliant oil tanker operating in a hazardous area in the eastern Strait of Hormuz struck a mine and caught fire; the vessel had previously turned off its tracking and navigation systems. Iranian officials added that Tehran had repeatedly notified the shipowner that the Strait of Hormuz is in an unsafe condition and is closed to unauthorized vessels attempting uncoordinated transit.
