Recap: Ethereum mining pool Ethermine once distributed a $2.6 million exorbitant transaction fee to miners.
In June 2020, Ethereum mining pool Ethermine (operated by Bitfly) faced a unique situation: a user mistakenly paid an exceptionally high transaction fee of 10,668 ETH (worth approximately $2.6 million at the time) due to an operational error. After freezing the transaction and waiting for the sender to claim it for several days without success, Ethermine decided to distribute the fee to the miners active in its pool at the time. This incident occurred during Ethereum's Proof-of-Work (PoW) era; now that Ethereum has transitioned to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mechanism, such mining pool distributions are a thing of the past.
