BitShares (BTS) Project Overview and Core Mechanisms

BitShares (BTS) is a pioneering decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) and blockchain platform designed and launched in 2014 by Dan Larimer, a renowned developer in the cryptocurrency space. It aims to build a real-time, blockchain-based financial platform that provides decentralized banking services.A core feature of BitShares is its built-in decentralized exchange (DEX), which allows users to trade without entrusting their funds to a third party, thereby reducing the risks associated with centralized exchanges.
BitShares employs a Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism, which theoretically enables high transaction throughput and extremely low transaction fees.Unique innovations within its ecosystem include “SmartCoins,” which are cryptocurrencies issued by staking the core BTS token and pegged to real-world assets such as the U.S. dollar (bitUSD) and gold, with the aim of providing price stability.BTS token holders, acting as “shareholders,” participate in network governance through voting to determine the future direction and parameters of the blockchain.

Current Status and Challenges Facing the BitShares Project

Although BitShares is forward-thinking in terms of technology and philosophy, the project has faced severe challenges and negative developments in recent years:

- Delisting from Major Exchanges: Binance announced in December 2023 that it would delist the BTS token, which severely impacted BTS’s liquidity and market visibility. Previously, Binance had also delisted New BitShares (NBS).
- Limited Development Funding: Since September 2020, funding for BitShares’ developer work proposal system has been drastically reduced due to the misuse of the reserve pool, with the daily budget capped at 1 BTS. This has resulted in a severe shortage of financial support for the project’s core development and maintenance.
- Shrinking Community and Ecosystem: The BitShares community has continued to shrink, partly due to the emergence of new forked coins, the closure of multiple gateways resulting in user asset losses, and the misuse of the BitShares trademark.
- Price Performance: As of August 2, 2026, the real-time price of BTS was approximately $0.0011, representing a decline of over 99.9% from its all-time high of $0.9168 reached on January 2, 2018, reflecting widespread market pessimism regarding its value.
