What is UST? Definition and Mechanism of TerraUSD

TerraUSD (UST) is a cryptocurrency issued by Terraform Labs on the Terra blockchain, and was once an algorithmic stablecoin. Unlike stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, which are backed by fiat currency or equivalent asset reserves, UST's stability primarily relied on its algorithmic mechanism with LUNA (later renamed LUNC), the native token of the Terra ecosystem.

Operating Mechanism: The Dual-Token Model of Algorithmic Stablecoins

The core of UST was its "two-way burn and mint" mechanism. This mechanism aimed to maintain UST's price at $1 through arbitrage opportunities:

  • When the UST price was above $1, users could mint 1 UST by burning $1 worth of LUNA, and then sell the UST for a profit at a price higher than $1. This process increased the supply of UST, helping to pull its price back to $1.
  • When the UST price was below $1, users could burn 1 UST to mint $1 worth of LUNA, and then sell the LUNA for a profit. This process reduced the supply of UST, helping to push its price back to $1.

The theoretical basis of this mechanism was that as long as there was sufficient demand for LUNA in the market, it could provide stable support for UST.

Historical Status and Applications: A Former DeFi Giant

Before its collapse in May 2022, UST was the third-largest stablecoin by market capitalization in the cryptocurrency market, trailing only USDT and USDC. It played a significant role in the Terra ecosystem and the broader DeFi space, being widely used in lending, liquidity mining, yield aggregation, and derivative trading, especially offering up to 20% annual yield on its Anchor protocol, which attracted a large amount of capital.

UST's fate took a catastrophic turn in May 2022, and its collapse had a profound impact on the entire cryptocurrency market.

The Collapse of UST: The "Death Spiral" of May 2022

On May 7, 2022, UST began to depeg from its dollar peg and experienced severe depegging in the following days. Large-scale UST selling triggered its algorithmic mechanism, leading the system to mint more LUNA in an attempt to maintain the peg. However, the infinite minting of LUNA caused its price to plummet, further weakening the support for UST and forming a vicious cycle known as the "death spiral."

To save UST's peg, the Luna Foundation Guard (LFG) sold billions of dollars in its Bitcoin reserves, but failed, instead exacerbating market panic. Ultimately, the UST price fell from $1 to almost zero (reaching a low of $0.000102), and the LUNA price dropped from a high of $119 to $0.00005. The Terra ecosystem subsequently collapsed, with hundreds of billions of dollars in total market capitalization evaporating. Terra founder Do Kwon was also internationally wanted as a result.

Current Status of UST: TerraClassicUSD (USTC)

After the collapse, the original UST token was renamed TerraClassicUSD (USTC). As of August 17, 2026, the price of USTC is approximately between $0.0048 and $0.007997, far below its former $1 peg target. Its market capitalization is approximately $26.98 million. USTC no longer functions as a stablecoin, and its trading volume and liquidity are limited, existing primarily as a historical legacy asset on a few trading platforms.

Causes of Collapse and Market Lessons

The collapse of UST is widely considered to be a manifestation of inherent flaws in algorithmic stablecoin design:

  • Mechanism Vulnerability: Lacking sufficient real asset collateral, its stability relied entirely on arbitrage mechanisms and demand for LUNA. Once market confidence collapsed, large-scale selling led to mechanism failure.
  • High-Yield Trap: The 20% annual yield offered by the Anchor protocol was considered unsustainable, attracting a large amount of capital but also laying the groundwork for a liquidity crunch.
  • Macro Environment: The Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes and overall market panic at the time also accelerated the collapse.

The UST incident provided a profound lesson for the entire cryptocurrency industry, prompting markets and regulators to re-examine the risks and regulatory needs of stablecoins, especially for uncollateralized or undercollateralized algorithmic stablecoins.

USTC Trading and Risk Warning

Given that TerraClassicUSD (USTC) has depegged from its stablecoin function and the project has experienced a major collapse, its trading carries extremely high risks. USTC still has trading pairs on some cryptocurrency exchanges, but liquidity is limited, price fluctuations are severe, and it no longer possesses value as a stablecoin. Investors considering trading USTC must fully understand its historical background and current risks, and verify the availability of trading channels themselves.
