AI Hashrate Demand Drives TSMC Revenue to New Highs
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's leading pure-play foundry, achieved approximately $35.9 billion (NT$1.134 trillion) in revenue in Q1 2026, a 40.6% year-over-year increase, exceeding market expectations and marking its fourth consecutive quarter of record-high revenue. Net profit for the same period reached $18.131 billion, with a gross margin of 66.2%, demonstrating its strong profitability. The core driver of this significant growth is the explosive global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) hashrate.

The rapid development of AI technology has led to a continuous surge in demand for high-performance computing (HPC) chips from major clients such as NVIDIA, Apple, and AMD. TSMC's advanced process capacities, including 3nm, 4nm, and 5nm, are fully utilized, and the company plans to increase chip prices for both advanced and mature processes by up to 10% in 2027. For instance, the pricing for 3nm wafers has already risen from approximately $18,000 in 2025 to $25,000-$27,000. TSMC expects its AI-related business revenue to triple in 2024 and forecasts "very strong" AI demand through 2029-2030.
Market Dominance and Valuation Considerations
TSMC holds an absolute dominant position in the global foundry market, with a market share as high as 72.5% as of Q2 2026. This market position grants TSMC strong pricing power and negotiation leverage, enabling it to pass on rising costs to downstream customers, thereby maintaining and expanding its profit margins.
As of September 4, 2026, TSMC's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is approximately 30.96 to 31.99 times. This valuation level has sparked market discussions on whether "a 30x P/E is a starting point or an endpoint." On the positive side, this P/E ratio is still below the tech industry average of approximately 36.16, and many analysts believe that given TSMC's critical role in the AI supply chain, its valuation still has room to grow. Wall Street analysts generally give a "buy" rating, with an average target price of $523.22 as of September 11, 2026, implying an upside of approximately 22%. Goldman Sachs and KGI Securities also raised their target prices for TSMC after its record August revenue. Investors can view TSMC's real-time quotes and analysis on financial information platforms such as Svmuu.

However, some analysts also express concern about the sustainability of massive spending on AI infrastructure by hyperscale cloud service providers (such as Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft), comparing it to the dot-com bubble era. These companies pledged nearly $700 billion in capital projects in 2026, most of which ultimately flows to TSMC.
Future Outlook and Challenges
To meet the growing demand for AI chips, TSMC is actively expanding its global production capacity. The company's capital expenditure guidance for 2026 is as high as $52-56 billion, far exceeding expectations, and it approved a capital budget of approximately $29.44 billion for capacity expansion in August 2026. TSMC is building new fabs in Japan, Europe, and Arizona, USA, to achieve a broader geographical footprint.

Despite the optimistic outlook, TSMC also faces challenges. CEO C.C. Wei acknowledged that operating costs for overseas fabs are higher, which could impact future profit margins to some extent. However, with its advantages in advanced packaging and continuous technological innovation, TSMC is expected to maintain its core competitiveness in the AI era.
