World Economic Forum's Web3 Climate Initiative
The World Economic Forum (WEF) officially launched the Crypto Sustainability Coalition in September 2022, aiming to bring together global forces to explore and leverage the immense potential of Web3 technologies in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development. This public-private partnership brings together 30 key players in sustainability, cryptocurrency, and blockchain technology, all committed to translating Web3 innovations into tangible climate outcomes.

Background and Objectives
The Crypto Sustainability Coalition is a crucial component of the Crypto Impact and Sustainability Accelerator (CISA) framework, launched by the World Economic Forum in January 2022. CISA aims to deepen the understanding of the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts of crypto technologies. The coalition's core objectives are to support R&D, share best practices, influence relevant regulations, and conduct extensive educational outreach to better guide government regulation of Web3 technologies and incentivize investment and research into their development.
Three Key Focus Areas

To achieve its ambitious goals, the coalition has established three key working groups, each focusing on:
- Energy and Material Consumption of the Crypto Industry: Aims to gain a clearer understanding of the climate and natural resource impacts of the crypto industry (including cryptocurrency mining), providing data support for the industry's sustainable development.
- Potential of Web3 in Climate Action: Explores how Web3 innovations can effectively address the challenges of low-carbon transition. For example, leveraging the decentralized and off-peak operational models of crypto mining to provide new business models for renewable energy microgrids, enhancing energy efficiency and resilience.
- "On-chain" Carbon Credits: Dedicated to addressing the shortcomings of global carbon markets, including lack of transparency, failure to effectively reduce emissions, and difficulty for small farmers and indigenous communities to participate. Through blockchain technology, a more transparent, credible, and inclusive carbon credit system can potentially be established.
Key Participants and Collaboration Model

The coalition's public-private partnership model brings together 30 entities from various sectors, including:
- Technology and Blockchain Companies: Accenture, Ripple Labs Inc., Solana, Avalanche, Circle, Energy Web Foundation, eToro, EY, NEAR Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, etc.
- Environmental and Sustainable Development Organizations: Rainforest Partnership, Climate Collective, KlimaDAO, Nori, ReSeed, Toucan Protocol, etc.
- Academic Institutions: University of Lisbon.

Brynly Llyr, Head of Blockchain and Digital Assets at the World Economic Forum, noted that Web3's core principles—transparency, coordination, trust, decentralization, and scalability—give it immense potential in addressing the climate crisis. Web3 can support and reward direct community engagement and action, coordinating large numbers of individuals for collective action without centralized control, thereby becoming a powerful accelerator for grassroots climate action.
For example, coalition member ReSeed has partnered with 8,700 farmers in Brazil, who have collectively removed 2 million tons of carbon through vegetation and soil on their land, demonstrating the practical effectiveness of Web3 technology in empowering community participation in climate action.
Challenges and Regulatory Considerations

Despite the immense potential of Web3 technology, the energy consumption of cryptocurrencies and Web3 is also drawing increasing attention. One of the coalition's working groups is specifically dedicated to analyzing the energy and material consumption of the crypto industry to establish a clearer picture of its climate impact. At the same time, the coalition also emphasizes the need for clear regulatory frameworks to foster Web3 innovation, protect consumers, and enhance financial inclusion, ensuring that technological development proceeds on a sustainable and responsible path.
