What is WCFG?

Wrapped Centrifuge (WCFG) was an Ethereum-based ERC-20 token whose core purpose was to bring the value of Centrifuge (CFG) tokens into the broader Ethereum decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem. Centrifuge (CFG) itself is the native asset of the Centrifuge Chain, built on Polkadot, primarily used for network staking and on-chain governance.

WCFG was not CFG itself, but a "wrapped" version of CFG on Ethereum, and a 1:1 exchange between the two was previously supported. This wrapping mechanism allowed the Centrifuge protocol to leverage the rich applications and liquidity on Ethereum while maintaining its core functionality within the Polkadot ecosystem.

WCFG played a crucial role in the Centrifuge protocol as a bridge connecting Real-World Assets (RWAs) with DeFi. It allowed tangible assets such as invoices and real estate to be tokenized and used as collateral in DeFi applications, thereby unlocking liquidity for these traditional assets. WCFG holders previously had the opportunity to participate in the protocol's governance decisions and use it for lending, trading, staking, and paying transaction fees within the Centrifuge ecosystem.

WCFG Token Status and Merger Migration

According to public information from the Centrifuge project team, as of May 20, 2026, the Wrapped Centrifuge (WCFG) token has completed its merger and migration with the existing Centrifuge governance token (CFG), and all related activities have been transferred to the new Centrifuge (CFG) token on Ethereum. This means that the WCFG token no longer exists as an independent, active trading instrument, and its historical mission is now carried forward by the merged CFG token on Ethereum.

Therefore, all current Centrifuge-related activities in the market, including trading, staking, and governance, revolve around the new Ethereum CFG token. The WCFG token no longer has an active trading market and lacks effective transactions.

Centrifuge Protocol and the RWA Sector

The Centrifuge protocol is a Layer 1 blockchain designed specifically for real-world assets, built on the Substrate framework. Its core vision is to bridge the gap between traditional finance and DeFi by tokenizing real-world assets such as invoices, real estate, and supply chain finance, providing new and more stable collateral sources for the DeFi market, and offering new financing channels for traditional asset owners.

The innovation of the Centrifuge protocol lies in its Tinlake decentralized application, which allows asset originators to package real-world assets into NFTs and use them as collateral to borrow in DeFi. This model brings a new narrative and growth point to DeFi, and also provides a path for traditional financial assets to enter the blockchain world.
