What Is an Iceberg Order?
Iceberg orders are advanced algorithmic trading instructions whose core function is to automatically split a large trade order into multiple smaller orders, with only a portion of these orders publicly displayed in the market depth. The name of this strategy vividly illustrates its operation: just as only the tip of an iceberg is visible above the water while most of its volume is hidden below, an iceberg order also displays only a small fraction of the trading volume, with the majority remaining concealed.
How Iceberg Orders Work
The mechanism of an iceberg order is designed to intelligently execute large trades while minimizing market impact. Its main features include:
- Order Splitting and Automatic Placement: After the user sets the total order volume and the visible order volume per transaction, the system automatically splits the large order into multiple smaller orders based on preset parameters (such as quick execution, balanced execution speed, or better price) and gradually places them into the market.
- Dynamic Adjustment and Cancellation: When one of the smaller orders is fully executed, or when the market price deviates significantly from the current order price, the system automatically cancels the existing order. Subsequently, it recalculates and places new smaller orders based on the latest market depth and prices, ensuring that trades are executed under favorable conditions.
- Parameter Settings: Traders can flexibly set various parameters, including the total order volume, the visible order volume in the market each time, the limit price for placing orders, and the conditions for triggering orders.
Iceberg Orders on the OKX Platform

As a leading cryptocurrency trading platform, OKX provides users with a powerful iceberg order strategy. Its features include:
- Multi-Market Support: OKX's iceberg order function is widely available, supporting use in spot, perpetual contract, futures contract, margin trading, and options markets, meeting the needs of different traders.
- Dynamic Order Placement Upgrade: OKX upgraded its iceberg strategy around July 2023, introducing a "dynamic order placement" feature. This means the system no longer places orders solely based on fixed price distances or ratios, but can now calculate and place orders by combining real-time dynamic prices such as bid 1, bid 2, ask 1, and ask 2 in the order book, further reducing slippage and better concealing trading intentions.
- Account Compatibility: As of June 2022, the iceberg strategy is temporarily not supported under OKX's portfolio margin account.
Advantages and Application Scenarios of Iceberg Orders
The iceberg order strategy is primarily aimed at professional traders, institutional investors, and high-net-worth individuals who need to execute large trades. Its core advantages include:
- Reduced Market Impact: By splitting large orders into smaller portions, it avoids causing drastic price fluctuations due to a single large order placement.
- Minimized Slippage: The intelligent order placement and cancellation mechanism helps capture better prices amidst market volatility, reducing slippage losses caused by large order volumes.
- Hidden Trading Intent: Displaying only a portion of the order volume effectively prevents other market participants (especially high-frequency trading bots) from tracking the trader's true intentions, avoiding being "preyed upon" or causing prices to be maliciously inflated/deflated.
- Optimized Average Execution Price: The strategy's dynamic adjustment capability helps complete trades over a longer period at an average price closer to the ideal.
