BUSD Stablecoin: An Analysis of Its Definition, Rise and Fall, and Current Status
BUSD (Binance USD) was a U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin launched through a partnership between Paxos and Binance, pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar. The ERC-20 BUSD issued by Paxos was strictly regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS).However, following the NYDFS’s February 2023 order for Paxos to cease issuing new BUSD—coupled with an investigation by the U.S. SEC—BUSD’s market position declined sharply. Binance ceased support for BUSD at the end of 2023 and automatically converted the remaining BUSD in user accounts to FDUSD in early 2024. Nevertheless, on July 6, 2026, the U.S. SEC concluded its investigation into Paxos’s issuance of BUSD and decided not to take enforcement action.
