U.S. judges held a closed-door meeting on Friday to establish the tariff refund process Donald Trump
Svmuu News: According to Reuters, a U.S. judge will meet behind closed doors with government lawyers on Friday to establish a process for refunding up to $175 billion in illegally collected tariffs. A judge described the meeting as a "settlement conference."U.S. Court of International Trade Judge Richard Eaton will meet with lawyers representing U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the agency responsible for refunding more than 300,000 importers who paid tariffs that were ruled unconstitutional.Government lawyers have stated that the process of refunding the “Donald Trump” tariffs is unprecedented in scale and requires manual review of tens of millions of tariff payment records. Although U.S. courts are typically open to the public, judges sometimes meet privately with parties to discuss scheduling or how to handle sensitive information. The court’s website schedule indicates that Friday’s meeting is a “closed session.”On February 20, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Donald Trump had exceeded its authority, declaring most of the tariffs unconstitutional and disrupting a key component of its economic policy.
