Svmuu News Musk's xAI is dispatching engineers directly to the offices of potential enterprise clients to poach customers from OpenAI and Anthropic PBC. This hands-on, on-site strategy has helped xAI win business from payment company Shift4 Payments. Shift4 CEO Taylor Lauber stated that the company plans to gradually phase out the use of OpenAI's ChatGPT and adopt xAI's Grok instead, but will continue using Anthropic's Claude for code development.
It is reported, however, that Shift4 is not a purely market-driven client win. The company's founder, Jared Isaacman, is an ally of Musk, having completed the world's first commercial spacewalk aboard a SpaceX spacecraft and currently serves as the NASA Administrator. SpaceX's Starlink is also a client of Shift4. In the three years since xAI's establishment, its clientele has primarily consisted of Musk-affiliated companies such as Tesla and SpaceX, as well as government agencies. Bloomberg points out that xAI's on-site strategy reflects a common trend in the AI industry: OpenAI and Anthropic are also actively sending out engineers to assist clients with deployment, and OpenAI is collaborating with private equity firms to establish dedicated "deployment units."
