Svmuu News: On July 21, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the U.S. Secret Service’s Washington Field Office announced that multiple investigations by the Cyber Fraud Task Force have seized more than $25 million in cryptocurrency, with the assets linked to international fraud schemes targeting residents of the United States and Canada.
The U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia has filed five civil forfeiture complaints seeking the forfeiture of the recovered cryptocurrency. Investigators have identified multiple money-laundering networks and thousands of victims worldwide; the largest complaint involves a romance scam affecting over 200 victims, with losses totaling approximately $12.1 million.
Another complaint involves a network of suspicious cryptocurrency wallets reported to the U.S. Secret Service by Canadian authorities, involving approximately $10.4 million. Agents traced more than 270 suspected victim transactions linked to fraudulent investment platforms; these two cases account for approximately 85% of the assets covered by the five civil forfeiture complaints.
The remaining cases involve blocked withdrawals, fraudulent investment accounts, and recovery fraud. Investigators stated that most suspected money launderers are located in Southeast Asia and identified IP addresses linked to China, Malaysia, and Cambodia; the five investigations are still ongoing.
