Kyiv warns Iran against escalation after Caspian Sea attack, denies targeting civilians
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned Iran against escalation following a Ukrainian drone attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, which Iran denounced. Sybiha emphasized the need to refrain from escalatory steps and urged Iran to cease support for Russia's war against Ukraine. Iran's top diplomat Abbas Araghchi confirmed the call, stating Sybiha assured the attack was "unintentional" and Ukraine had no desire to escalate tensions. Ukraine claims its strike targeted Russian warships and vessels transporting Iranian-linked military cargo, not civilian vessels or individuals. Iran, which previously accused Israel of provoking the attack, stated any attack on its citizens or interests is unacceptable and demands restitution for losses.
