The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) reports that nearly half of U.S. private-sector workers, totaling approximately 56 million individuals, do not have a retirement account. This is largely attributed to many employers not offering retirement savings plans like 401(k)s. The issue spans all age groups, with 40% of workers aged 55-65 and 57% of those aged 18-34 lacking such accounts. Both state-level programs and federal initiatives, including the upcoming TrumpIRA.gov and provisions under SECURE 2.0, are being implemented to address this gap.
