U.S. Federal Judge Says Donald Trump The government lacks evidence to support classifying Anthropic as a “supply chain risk”
A U.S. federal judge ruled that the Donald Trump administration failed to provide sufficient evidence to justify classifying the AI company Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” and banning the federal government from using its technology. This dispute stems from stalled contract negotiations between Anthropic and the U.S. Department of Defense, as Anthropic had previously stated that it did not want its AI technology to be used for mass surveillance or for targeting and firing decisions involving lethal weapons.U.S. District Judge Rita Lin noted that there is currently no evidence that Anthropic has the ability to modify models that have already been delivered or to “activate some kind of kill switch,” and she expressed concern about the government’s logic in imposing the ban on the grounds that Anthropic had publicly criticized the Department of Defense.Judge Lin had temporarily blocked the ban in March and is currently weighing whether to make the injunction permanent.
