US-Israel War on Iran Disrupts Europe's Summer Travel, Forcing Flight Reroutes and Boosting Intra-European Tourism
The conflict has compelled airlines to abandon large swathes of airspace, leading to longer, costlier detours and significant flight schedule changes. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) this week advised airlines to avoid Jordanian airspace and extended warnings for Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, and Oman until August 31. Major carriers like British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have suspended key routes to the Middle East. Consequently, European holidaymakers are increasingly opting for closer-to-home destinations such as Italy, Spain, Greece, and Norway, a trend confirmed by Europe's largest tour operator TUI. The rerouting adds 1-2 hours of flight time and 2,500-7,000kg of fuel consumption, also impacting destinations like Sri Lanka, which has seen a 20-30% drop in summer bookings.
