Brazil's central bank is assessing cross-border links for its Pix instant payment system, aiming for international integration amidst intensifying U.S. trade scrutiny.
The central bank stated in a report on Monday that connecting Pix with similar foreign platforms could lower costs, accelerate transactions, broaden access, and improve transparency in cross-border payments. This push comes as the U.S. government recently cited Pix among practices it views as unfair, using it to justify new 25% tariffs on Brazilian goods. The bank reiterated its view that Pix is critical public digital infrastructure. Pix transactions rose 25.7% in 2025 to nearly 80 billion, with volumes exceeding 35 trillion reais ($6.87 trillion).
