Federal Reserve's Goolsbee: Recent inflation data is encouraging, but I want to see more sustained evidence of cooling to confirm inflation is steadily returning to the 2% target.
Chicago Federal Reserve President Austan Goolsbee said on Friday that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) readings this summer have made him optimistic, showing that a series of price disturbances, such as tariff shocks and rising energy prices, are gradually being digested. He noted that if they could see three or four consecutive months of data similar to June's, he would be more confident that inflation is returning to the 2% target. Goolsbee supported keeping interest rates unchanged at the July FOMC meeting and listed inflation as the primary concern, while also stating that the U.S. economy is "basically stable" in terms of growth and the labor market.
