Al Jazeera: Israel’s war on Gaza forces Palestinians to rely on ‘Stone Age’ toilets, sparking health crisis
Reports indicate that displaced people in the Gaza Strip struggle to find safe, private, and sanitary toilets due to Israel's siege and import restrictions. A used toilet seat can cost as much as 1,500 to 2,000 shekels (approximately $503 to $671), forcing many to use plastic chairs with holes dug in the ground or rudimentary public toilets, with one toilet often shared by 20 to 25 people. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) assessed that only half of Gaza's population has access to basic sanitation facilities, and about 60% live within 10 meters of wastewater or human excrement. This has led to the spread of diseases such as diarrhea, skin diseases, and gastrointestinal problems among children, women, and the elderly.
