One position will focus on technology, specifically the intersection of health and artificial intelligence, while the other will be for drugs. These new leaders would report to President Donald Trump's pick for FDA commissioner, Heidi Overton, who still requires Senate confirmation. Jared Seehafer is reportedly the leading candidate for the technology role. The technology deputy commissioner would oversee both the agency's internal use of AI and its review of AI-enabled medical products. The move comes as the FDA faces scrutiny over its handling of foodborne outbreaks and new drug approvals, and has increasingly turned to AI for internal operations and regulating AI-enabled medical devices.
