Target (TGT) Q2 profit beats expectations, with nearly $1 billion from Donald Trump tariff refunds
Target reported earnings on August 20, achieving its second consecutive quarter of comparable sales growth and raising its full-year sales forecast to approximately 5% for the second time. However, the company's profit for the quarter exceeded expectations by $994 million due to a one-time tariff refund, following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that President Donald Trump overstepped his authority in imposing tariffs. Walmart also received nearly $2.9 billion in similar refunds during the same period, which it likewise used for price reductions. Analysts believe this indicates a temporary boost for the retail industry as a whole, but this boost will disappear after the refund cycle ends, potentially making year-over-year comparisons more challenging next year.
