The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon is set to expire at the end of 2026, and the EU is considering deploying a three-year military and civilian mission to fill part of the void.
The mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is set to expire on December 31, 2026. The European External Action Service (EEAS) has proposed a three-year military and civilian mission aimed at assisting and training the Lebanese Armed Forces and Internal Security Forces to strengthen Lebanon's state power. Analysts suggest that UNIFIL's withdrawal could benefit Israel, as the Lebanese Armed Forces might be compelled to coordinate more directly with the Israeli military. The UN is also developing alternative plans, including transferring remaining roles to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), and has presented three options to the Security Council for troop numbers ranging from 900 to 3,000. However, the EU's foreign policy chief has expressed skepticism about the willingness for a new European mission to fully replace UNIFIL.
