Musk and Zuckerberg Warn at G20 Summit: AI Development Faces Bottlenecks in Power and Skilled Worker Shortages; Musk Predicts AI Chip Power Deficit to Reach 15 Gigawatts by 2027
At the G20 Technology Ministers' Meeting held on September 1, Musk and Zuckerberg jointly warned global policymakers that the shortage of skilled workers and insufficient power supply are becoming the two core bottlenecks restricting AI development. Musk specifically pointed out that a significant power shortage could emerge as early as next year, with the power gap for AI chips projected to reach at least 15 gigawatts by 2027. Zuckerberg stated that Meta is already facing a shortage of skilled technicians, with "hundreds of thousands or even millions" of skilled positions required for data center construction proving difficult to fill. Musk revealed that companies like Google and Anthropic have begun leasing hashrate from SpaceX because SpaceX has proactively solved its power supply issues by building its own power plants.
