Poll shows over half of Americans are concerned AI data centers will drive up electricity costs and exacerbate water scarcity.
A new poll by The Associated Press, the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, and the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago shows that 53% of U.S. adults are "extremely" or "very" concerned about the environmental impact of artificial intelligence, a 12 percentage point increase from last year. Respondents are primarily worried that AI data centers will lead to higher electricity bills and strained water supplies. The survey also found that Americans' concerns about AI's carbon footprint far exceed those for high-emission industries such as meat production and aviation. Donald Trump had previously urged communities to embrace tech facilities, promising they would bring jobs.
