Sarah Heck, Anthropic's head of public policy, stated on Wednesday that artificial intelligence companies cannot manage oversight and safety concerns by relying on an "honor code," emphasizing the need for government involvement. She added that companies "can't be checking our own homework."

Heck's comments follow Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's recent call for the industry to deliberately slow the pace of model development, which garnered support from executives like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk. However, other tech leaders, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, expressed less conviction about intentionally slowing development, with Zuckerberg noting Meta had delayed its personal AI agent Muse to focus on safety without calling for others to do the same.
