Russia and China veto UN mandate to monitor Iran sanctions, ending Security Council's watchdog panel
The US-backed resolution, shut down on Thursday, would have authorized UN experts to continue monitoring sanctions reimposed last year after Western powers accused Iran of violating the 2015 nuclear pact. US Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Jennifer Locetta, stated that the veto creates a monitoring gap that only benefits the Iranian regime.
